In the old days, concert goers often taped shows on reel-to-reel machines or cassette tapes. These bootlegs—or, if you prefer, ROIOs (Recordings of Indeterminate Origin)—were often stealthily recorded, of poor sonic quality, included drunken conversations preserved for posterity, and suffered from lots of cuts and tape flips. These days, many bands allow fans to record shows for non-commerical use, and these tapers come equipped with fancy DAT recorders and high-quality mics. The results are some stunning recordings that make you feel like you were standing among thousands of your closest friends, sharing in the groove.

Instead of a taper burning a CD of the concert for some friends, and those friends trading it with others until it finally reaches you, the moden taping scene is about distribution. You can now find lossless FLAC audio files from a show available legally via BitTorrent—often less than 24 hours after a show takes place. For popular bands, there may even be multiple recordings to choose from. Note that iTunes can’t import or play FLAC files, but free players such as Cog can, and the free Max and xACT can convert them to MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, or other formats. And the Sonos and Squeezebox home audio systems can play FLAC files directly (find out more about those systems in our whole-home audio guide).

I’ve been collecting live music so long that I used to trade tapes in the mail. Luckily, that is no longer needed. Read the article for links to several great sites for free live music downloads. I’ve been a member of DIME and The Traders Den for years and it’s well worth the effort.

Most of the time is painful to
watch but every once in awhile you’ll find a gem.
My most recent search was for “The General Specific” by Band of Horses
and came across this video. Yes, it’s a cute girl staring into a
webcam but she has real talent. I couldn’t believe how good she was, I
thought I had discovered a hidden gem but when I looked at her profile
I discovered her channel has almost four million views. Julia Nunes
has been posting videos for a few years, so you can go back and watch
her journey from posting funny videos on YouTube to opening for Ben
Folds and playing Bonnaroo.

Here is the first of a soon to be regular feature on my blog, where I feature songs that are stuck in my head and are worthy to be stuck in yours.

The first song I’m going to share is “Get Better” by Mates of States. Mates of State are a great two piece indie rock band from Lawrence, Kansas. “Get Better” is poppy but has great lyrics and it just buries itself in your head.

Here is the official video:

httpv://youtube.com/watch?v=kdoYK9jOltQ

Here is a great live performance:

httpv://youtube.com/watch?v=Yu1ZXXKuPnk

Lyrics:

Forget your politics for a while
Let the color schemes arrive

Come on board, it’s a curious site
Absorbing sound that’s never been right
Never ahead of, never behind it
Occasionally guarded, just keeps us surrounded
It’s luck

Everything’s gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better

I propose a less serious boat
Don’t mistake for a party of jokes
You are never ahead of, never behind us
Floating in circles, there’s more to remind them of less

Everything’s gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better

Forget your politics for a while
Let the color schemes arrive

Download the song from iTunes or Amazon and support the artist.
